Point of Care Ultrasound for Community Practice – Mentorship Part 2

Course Objectives

This mentorship enables students to undertake a period of supervised regular scanning, at the conclusion of which competency will be assessed through a review of the scan portfolio and an observed structured clinical examination (OSCE). The 14 clinical questions addressed in this course are below:

  • 1. Does this have pulmonary oedema?
  • 2. Does this patient have a pleural effusion?
  • 3. Does this patient have pneumonia?
  • 4. Is there evidence of bladder retention in this patient?
  • 5. Is the intra-uterine contraceptive in the uterus?
  • 6. Is there free fluid in the abdomen?
  • 7. Does this patient have an abdominal aortic aneurysm
  • 8. Is there evidence of hydronephrosis?
  • 9. Does this patient have gallstones?
  • 10. Does the patient have cholecystitis?
  • 11. Does this patient have a knee effusion?
  • 12. Does this patient have a Baker’s cyst?
  • 13. Does this patient have cellulitis?
  • 14. Does the patient have an abscess?

What’s included 

Up to 6 months of remote mentorship (training) and 1 day of face-to-face assessment.

    Course Description

    Mentor support for 6 months to review and feedback on your scans, additional teaching support and sessions (details will be provides when you enrol).

    Mentors are from a group of clinicians who have already completed and passed this course, or faculty from the face-to-face day. All of them will be suitably experienced and qualified to support you.

    To perform an ultrasound in your workplace you must check your insurance provider and professional body for guidance.

    No. The mentorship is designed to give you support, consolidate your learning and sign off competence – it includes further learning sessions, support remotely for sharing and reporting on your images and concludes with an OSCE. Whether you decide to complete the mentorship phase of learning will be determined by your previous experience and competency. Please consult your professional body for advice.

    If you are joining the mentorship course, you will need to buy or rent a Ge Vscan air CL system with Cloud licence enabled.

    You need the cloud license on the Vscan to enable the capability to share and review your images with your mentor as part of the mentorship programme. Your mentor will be set up on the Vscan cloud system.

    • Option 1: You can purchase a Vscan only.
    • Option 2: You can purchase the mentorship course with a 6-month rental of a Vscan with a cloud licence.
    • Option 3: You can purchase the mentorship course with a a Vscan with 1 year cloud license

    We envisage that most people will have completed this phase of their learning within 6 months.
