Introduction to Ultrasound of the Foot and Ankle for the Podiatrist

Course Objectives

  • Deliver a grounding in essential physical principles of ultrasound.
  • Learn the controls of a scanner and how to optimise an ultrasound image.
  • Identify the anatomy of the lower limb on ultrasound.
  • Receive instruction on probe handling and patient positioning to obtain ultrasound images of key target structures.

What’s Included?

  • Each delegate has their own POD Toolbox for the duration of the course. This contains a GE Vscan Air CL ultrasound system and gel phantom. Ultrasound gel and wipes are also included.
  • 4 x weekly 2hr live teaching sessions with lectures, demonstrations, and interactive guided scanning practice.
  • Weekly homework assignment with feedback to guide practice.
  • All sessions are recorded and delegates have access to the videos for 4 weeks after the end of the course
  • CPD certificate upon completion.

    Alastair initially graduated for the University of Plymouth with a Bsc(Hons) degree in podiatry medicine and later with a Pg Cert in MSK foot and ankle diagnostic ultrasound.

    Alastair strives to maintain The Foot and Gait Clinic as a centre of excellence for medical professionals, especially those associated with biomechanics and MSK. The Foot and Gait Clinic has seen much success and maintains a phenomenal reputation over the last 40 years and Alastair is driven to push its clinical and professional standards even further

    Alastair is a MSK podiatrist who specialises in biomechanics of the lower limb. He typically treats patients with bone, muscle, ligament and tendon issues. With a lot in his arsenal, he is able to perform advanced assessments, diagnostic ultrasound, manipulations/mobilisations, create exercise programmes, shockwave, orthotics manufacture, laser and guided injections including steroid and hyaluronic acid.

    Alastair is also a member of the MSK special advisory board for the Royal College of Podiatry and regularly provides training for podiatrists and sonographers.

    Mentor support for 6 months to review and feedback on your scans, additional teaching support and sessions (details will be provides when you enrol).

    Mentors are from a group of clinicians who have already completed and passed this course, or faculty from the face-to-face day. All of them will be suitably experienced and qualified to support you.

    To perform an ultrasound in your workplace you must check your insurance provider and professional body for guidance.

    No. The mentorship is designed to give you support, consolidate your learning and sign off competence – it includes further learning sessions, support remotely for sharing and reporting on your images and concludes with an OSCE. Whether you decide to complete the mentorship phase of learning will be determined by your previous experience and competency. Please consult your professional body for advice.

    If you are joining the mentorship course, you will need to buy or rent a Ge Vscan air CL system with Cloud licence enabled.

    You need the cloud license on the Vscan to enable the capability to share and review your images with your mentor as part of the mentorship programme. Your mentor will be set up on the Vscan cloud system.

    • Option 1: You can purchase a Vscan only.
    • Option 2: You can purchase the mentorship course with a 6-month rental of a Vscan with a cloud licence.
    • Option 3: You can purchase the mentorship course with a a Vscan with 1 year cloud license

    We envisage that most people will have completed this phase of their learning within 6 months.

    Less than 28 days’ notice = No refund
    29 to 56 days’ notice = 50% refund
    Over 57 days’ notice = Full refund, less an administrative charge of 4% of the course fee
