Course Objectives
What’s Included?
This course is aimed at rheumatology trainees. consultants who have no or limited scanning experience. or AHPs working within rheumatology/MSK services. It will deliver instruction on and practice of fundamental techniques of scanning, mixing delivery of theory with hands on practice with assignments to reinforce techniques. The course does not constitute a formal credit-bearing qualification or deliver competency although CPD points are awarded.
The format is home-based practical instruction facilitated by loan of a simple hand held ultrasound scanner to each delegate to enable practice and reinforcement of technique away from the clinical use environment. The programme has been specifically designed to develop applied anatomic knowledge. focusing on scanning technique and identification of target structures.
The course is conducted over 5 weeks.
All delegates are sent an Orea POD Toolbox containing a Sanon 300L portable ultrasound. a specially made gel phantom. ultrasound gel and clinical. The POD Toolbox incorporates all the elements necessary to enable the progressive acquisition of knowledge and skills through home-based practice. The teaching programme is delivered by a combination of interactive lectures delivered over Zoom and practice exercises that will equip delegates with the essential cognitive skills necessary to begin incorporating ultrasound imaging guidance into their daily clinical management.
There is an assignment at the end of each session which helps the delegates to revise the concepts learnt during each session and to provide a framework for practising those skills.
Honorary Consultant Rheumatologist at Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust, Senior Lecturer in Rheumatology at the University of Leeds
Dr Richard Wakefield is a Senior Lecturer in Rheumatology at the University of Leeds and an Honorary Consultant Rheumatologist at Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust. He is the ultrasound research leadfor the Leeds Biomedical Research centre. His main research focus for 25 years has been on the use of ultrasound for the diagnosis and management of patients with inflammatory arthritis. His work has contributed to the evidence base for the development of international standards for using ultrasound for a range of musculoskeletal disorders. Dr Wakefield was the founding co-chair of the OMERACT US group and has published over 200 imaging related papers and coedited the first ultrasound textbook endorsed by EULAR.
He supervises Masters, MD and PhD students. His other major interest is medical education and training. He has helped develop the first UK ultrasound curriculum for medical students at the Leeds Medical School, UK. He has hosted over 50 international ultrasound fellows, has been convenor of past ultrasound courses for the BSR and EULAR and has been a presenter and teacher at many international meetings/ courses.

Member of technical application teams at Olympus leading introduction of Narrow Band Imaging into gastroenterology, urology and surgery.

You get to keep and use the Orca POD for the entire duration of the course and we’ll arrange the collection after the last session/assessment.
We provide pre-course technical support to help you from the time you receive your Orca POD. Our team is available for one-on-one meetings before and between sessions to support you.
When someone is unable to attend a session a colleague can attend in their place.
