CPD: CPD awarded through the Association of Surgeons in Primary Care, CPD certifications award 16 hrs and endorsement by RCGP applied for.
Course Objectives
- For learners to understand the physics of ultrasound.
- For learners to understand the core functions of ultrasound probe handling.
- For learners to be able to optimise the image on an ultrasound system. For learners to be able to apply ultrasound imaging in a rigorous standardised manner within daily practice to rapidly answer the 14 clinically relevant questions (see course description.
What's Included?
- 4 Sessions of remote guided practice and one day face to face-to-face practical to refine the technique.
- Each delegate has their own POD box for the duration of the course. This contains an ultrasound transducer, tablet, and gel phantom. Ultrasound gel and wipes are also included.
- 4 x weekly 2-hour live teaching sessions with lectures, demonstrations and interactive guided scanning practice.
- Weekly homework assignments with feedback to progressively develop technique.
- One full-day face-to-face session with a good ratio of students to faculty for practising the scan techniques in preparation for supervised application in clinical practice.
This course is intended to meet the training needs of clinicians working in the primary care environment who wish to use ultrasound scanning within their daily practice. The program will develop probe-handling and interpretation skills and focus on the use of ultrasound scanning to answer a series of 14 commonly encountered clinical questions. Delegates will learn scan protocols and incorporate them into their routine patient assessment to assist in clarifying answers to these questions. Completion of the course enables students to enrol on a period of supervised regular scanning, at the conclusion of which competency will be assessed through a review of the scan portfolio and an observed structured clinical examination (OSCE). The 14 clinical questions addressed in this course are below:
- Does this have pulmonary oedema?
- Does this patient have a pleural effusion?
- Does this patient have pneumonia?
- Is there evidence of bladder retention in this patient?
- Is the intra-uterine contraceptive in the uterus?
- Is there free fluid in the abdomen?
- Does this patient have an abdominal aortic aneurysm
- Is there evidence of hydronephrosis?
- Does this patient have gallstones?
- Does the patient have cholecystitis?
- Does this patient have a knee effusion?
- Does this patient have a Baker’s cyst?
- Does this patient have cellulitis?
- Does the patient have an abscess?
Dr. Lee Pursglove
General practitioner and specialist interested in Point of Care Ultrasound in GP and Minor Surgery/ Joint Injections
BSc (Hons), MBChB, DRCOG, MRCGP, PgCert (Medical Ultrasound) Doctor within the NHS.
Lee is an NHS GP using his skills in Point of Care Ultrasound (POCUS) to facilitate his practice and augment the patient journey. This expedites patient care and significantly increases patient satisfaction. His areas of scan interest include the abdomen, testes, soft tissue lesions, MSK, vascular and using POCUS to plan minor surgical procedures including joint injections. Lees' passion in this area has allowed him to travel, teach and highlight the benefit of POCUS to other GPs around Europe.
